If you love coffee, you know there’s always room to learn something new – like finding the best way to brew the perfect cup of Lava Lei!
Coffee is a personal experience – a very personal experience, depending on who you ask. From individual flavor preferences to culture and lifestyle customs, there are factors that can affect how you make your favorite cup of coffee. The amount of acidity and bitterness combined with the roast level, for example, help make up only some of the intricate flavor profiles that coffee drinkers have come to enjoy and demand. Aware of these expectations, we’ve put together some tips to help you brew the perfect cup of Lava Lei coffee with these classic pour-over instructions.
The Basics of
Pour-Over Coffee
The most essential factors or ingredients are premium coffee and the purity of water.
Excellent quality and freshness are the most critical factors. At Lava Lei, we roast our beans in small to medium batches to secure freshness.
Total Brew Time: approximate 4 minutes
Yield: 2 cups of coffee (8oz each)
Water to Coffee Ratio: 5 5 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 16oz of water (approximately 30g of coffee + 16oz of water)
Equipment: coffee grinder, cone/dipper, filter, your favorite cup
GRIND YOUR BEANS:
Grind the coffee to a point where it looks a little finer than rough sea salt.
To keep the best taste profile and maintain aroma, be sure to grind your beans just before brewing them. By doing so, you’ll help keep the flavors of the coffee locked in until you’re ready to taste them.
PREPARE THE DRIPPER/CONE:
Line the dripper/cone with a paper filter and pour hot water over the filter (without coffee) to remove any dust. You can do this over a kitchen sink, for example. This will clean and re-heat the dripper/cone, priming it for brewing.
Place 5 tablespoons of ground coffee on the paper filter (this will make approximately two 8oz cups).
BOIL PURIFIED WATER:
Boil purified water (or other high-quality water – not distilled watrer) in pot or kettle and wait 10 seconds or so to obtain ideal temperature for brewing coffee (approximately 200 degrees).
BREW YOUR COFFEE:
Place a large mug or your favorite cup under the dripper/cone. Slowly pour water into filter-lined dripper/cone in a circular motion to saturate the grounds about an inch above the coffee grounds. Allow 15-second pauses to allow the grounds to soften and bubble a little (this is called blooming).
Continue pouring water over the grounds until you have reached the desired amount of brewed coffee.
** This is the perfect time to add your favorite extras like sugar, creamer, milk, or cinnamon, among others.
ENJOY YOUR FRESHLY-BREWED LAVA LEI COFFEE!
